I will participate in class discussions regarding the text and literary elements of Anglo-Saxon literature.
I will form an answer to the following prompt using textual evidence that I have collected in this unit: Joseph Campbell suggests that heroes develop in stages and that individuals prepare themselves for heroism through a series of challenges that they overcome. Analyze and evaluate how Campbell's ideas are portrayed in the character of Beowulf with specific examples from the text.

Day 1 Objective: Learners will review Anglo-Saxon culture and literary elements. Lesson Activities:
View and analyze Anglo Saxon Riddles and work in groups to form your own Anglo-Saxon riddle using the literary devices discussed in this unit.
Boast Off- Students form “boasts” about themselves, their family, past, accomplishments, and future ambitions that contain the literary elements discussed in this unit. Students will have a classwide “Boast Off” to present information (students or teacher will declare a winner)
Day 2
Groups research information on a real-world hero of their choice, including but not limited to the culture the hero is from, famous stories involving the hero, and mapping out elements of the Hero’s Journey ala Campbell. This information will be presented to the class.
Day 3
Form a Shrinklit poem summarizing the plot of Beowulf and using the literary elements discussed in this unit.
Day 4-Culminating Writing Task Objective: Analyze and evaluate how Campbell's ideas are portrayed in the character of Beowulf with specific examples from the text. Lesson Activities:
Learners will use textual evidence to answer the prompt:Joseph Campbell suggests that heroes develop in stages and that individuals prepare themselves for heroism through a series of challenges that they overcome. In a 3-5 paragraph essay, analyze and evaluate how Campbell's ideas are portrayed in the character of Beowulf with specific examples from the text.
